In the 18th & 19th century, civilian firearms were muzzle loaded with a measured charge of loose black powder. It was important that the charge be measured to ensure consistency of gun performance. This was especially critical with long rifles because optimum accuracy was desired.
Our measure is made of iron with a brass base and attachment loop. This is typical of surviving 18th century examples. A plunger moves up and down inside of the tube to vary load sizes, designated by hand. There are engraved numbers on the plunger shaft.
